Carlos de Haes
1829-1898
Carlos de Haes was Belgian-born Spanish painter. He was the introductor of the landscaping in the Spanish painting, even to the point of that he held the first “cátedra de paisaje” in the Real Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
His landscapes were composed in classic way, although with predominance of the land over the sky, usually overlapped with a third surface of the linen.
He founded an important school of landscape painters in Madrid, in whose tradition Aureliano Beruete has been formed, for example. Carlos de Haes had a big impact on other artists, distant to Madrid’s school, such as Darío de Regoyos closer to the impressionistic landscape tradition.
The Prado Museum possesses an important collection of landscape paintings of different periods that not only includes Haes, but also works of his followers, like mentioned Beruete and Regoyos. This is excellent opportunity for viewers to compare landscapes of the different styles and to follow the evolution of the landscaping manner, practiced through two represented generations.
